‘Catastrophic incompetence’: Political parties welcome Kabelo Gwamanda’s resignationGwamanda who was elected in May 2023 finally handed in his resignation letter on Tuesday, 13 August. Mthembu said they argued from the day of his election that Gwamanda, who replaced Thapelo Amad, another disastrous mayor from Al Jama-ah, was not fit for the role and would certainly be unable to meet the job’s demands. Former City of Johannesburg mayor and Democratic Alliance member Mpho Phalatse said it was about time Gwamanda resigned. However, this is half of the problem solved.
Likewise, the Johannesburg Crisis Alliance welcomed the resignation. Still, it emphasised that it was not a victory but a critical moment for a renewed commitment to better governance in the metro municipality.
