The new law will bring cats in line with dogs, which are already required to be microchipped making it easier to reunite lost or stolen pets with their owners
Cat owners are being warned that they need to take action before a new law comes in next year. From June 10, 2024, all cats have to be microchipped.
Microchips contain the owner's contact details, meaning lost or stolen animals can be tracked. Cats will need to be chipped before they are 20 weeks old. After June 10 next year, owners who have not complied will have 21 days to have their pets chipped, or face the fine, reports the M.E.N. It will not be compulsory for free-living cats that live with little or no human interaction or dependency, such as farm, feral or community cats. Owners with cats that are already microchipped should ensure their details are up to date.
Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey said: “Cats and kittens are treasured members of the family and it can be devastating for owners when they are lost or stolen. Legislating for compulsory microchipping of cats will give comfort to families by increasing the likelihood that lost or stray pets can be reunited with their owners.”
