If the bid is successful as expected, the news will see the island of Ireland play host to a major international football tournament for the first time ever
The Ireland & UK bid to host Euro 2028 will be unopposed after UEFA announced Turkey’s decision to withdraw from the process.
If the bid is successful as expected, the news will see Ireland play host to a major international football tournament for the first time ever. England have previously hosted the 1966 World Cup and Euro 96 tournaments, and was also the main staging ground for Euro 2021.Northern Ireland have just one proposed ground for the bid, Casement Park in west Belfast.
Croke Park was included in the preliminary bid submission last year, at a time when UEFA were considering expanding the Euros from 24 to 32 teams. But the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales won’t all receive automatic places at the Euro 2028 finals.
