Carver Cultural Center headliner shares passion for music with San Antonio high school students
Jazz vibraphonist Stefon Harris, who performs at the Carver Community Cultural Center on Friday, offers a workshop with high school musicians at Sam Houston High School.SAN ANTONIO — After the 12 instrumentalists at Sam Houston High School played the first notes of Mongo Santamaría’s “Afro Blue,” composer, vibraphonist and band leader Stefon Harris offered notes of their performance.
“It’s not that you’re playing the instruments technically differently. It has to do with your intention,” Harris said. “The art of music is the art of articulating emotions and organized sound. Harris has served as director of Jazz Arts at the Manhattan School of Music, on the jazz faculty of New York University and was a visiting professor at Rutgers University. Carver executive director Cassandra Parker-Nowicki said it’s evident that the teaching side is as important as the playing. Parker-Nowicki said youths, seniors and veterans have the opportunity to experience and learn from international touring artists in their programs.Harris said music classes are an essential part of his concert tours. While traveling, he seeks to be with young people, not to create the next generation of musicians, but to try and inspire compassion in the world. Music, particularly jazz, he said, is one of the great platforms to demonstrate that.
