The evening session of the NCAA tournament produced a few more close games and a pair of double digit upsets as Drake and Arkansas move on.
The Eagles rallied to win the opener 20-11 and the Tigers claimed the second game 23-9. In the first game, Carroll rallied from 10-0 down with 20 runs in the final three innings, including five in the fifth to avoid the 10-run mercy rule.
The Eagles added seven runs in the sixth inning and eight runs in the seventh in their high-scoring finish to the game. Kaden Baxter had two hits and five runs batted in and Grant Houston had a hit and drove in four for Carroll. Caleb Hicks had two hits, while Kaleb Knighton, Carter Clarke and Zekayden Vincent all had a hit with two RBI for the Eagles. Bryce Coleman added a hit and one RBI. For Eufaula, Reed Hinton had three hits with one run batted in, Parker Symons and Cooper Wingate had two hits each with Symons driving in two runs and Wingate one run. He gave up only one hit and had no walks or strikeouts. In game two, Eufaula scored eight runs in the first inning to go up 8-1 but the Eagles tied it with three runs in the second and five in the third before the Tigers scored 12 runs in the bottom of the third to reclaim control of the game. Symons, Hays and Hinton were all 3-for-4 with Symons driving in five runs, Hays four and Hinton one. Symons had two doubles and a triple for his hits. Corbin Knott, Ben Jackson and Forrest Stephenson added a hit and RBI each. Nolan Hays was Eufaula’s winning pitcher, striking out four over 3 1/3 innings. Stephenson worked the last 1 2/3 innings and had one strikeout. For Carroll, Knighton had two hits and three runs batted in, Coleman had a hit with two RBI and Clarke had a hit and an RBI.Dothan lost twice in a doubleheader at Smiths Station, falling 10-6 and 6-4. In the opener, Dothan tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth, but the Panthers answered with three in the bottom half and added two more in the sixth in taking the 10-6 win. For Dothan, Kane Shellhouse had a three-run double, Will Walker had two hits, including a run-scoring single. Graham Davis also had a run-scoring single and Carter Richards had an RBI sacrifice fly. In game two, the Wolves outhit the Panthers 10-5, but all five hits played a role in Smiths Station’s scoring as did a couple of walks. Walker, Shellhouse and Emmanuel Lewis had two hits each for Dothan with Walker driving in a run. Ayush Patel and Graham Davis both had a hit and an RBI and Braddoc Jenkins had an RBI sac fly.Brady Lewiss pitched a five-inning, one-hit shutout with five strikeouts and one walk, while the Dale County offense had 11 hits with all nine players earning at least one in the Class 4A, Area 2 win. Aden Gordon and Avery Faulkner both had two hits with Gordon with a triple and two runs batted in and Faulkner with one RBI. Gavin Fultz and Maddox Weed both had a hit and an RBI for the Warriors .Slocomb took charge with eight runs in the first inning and led 12-0 before ending the Class 3A, Area 2 game in five innings on the 10-run mercy rule. Cade Birge had three hits, including two triples, and three runs batted in and Cade Hodges had two hits and two RBI. Jaxon Langham had an RBI triple, while Luke Goodman, Easton Reeder, Dylan Owens and Brody Keel all had a hit and an RBI. Three pitchers worked for Slocomb, starting with Langham, who pitched two innings of shutout and hitless ball with one strikeout. Weston Sasser pitched two innings, striking out four and giving up two earned runs and five hits. Birge threw the last inning, retiring all three batters, one on a strikeout. For the Knights, seven players had one hit each with Issac Handcock, Chase Collins, Isaac Sullivan and Briggs Mendheim all with a hit and an RBI.Opp scored four runs in the top of the seventh to overcome a one-run deficit and beat New Brockton in a Class 4A, Area 4 game. Nolan Brown had a two-run double and Landon Langley had an RBI ground out in the four-run seventh. Dawson Peacock scored the inning’s other run on a throwing error. Peacock, Cash Harrell and Grady Patterson had two hits each for Opp with Peacock driving in one run. Brown added an RBI sacrifice fly to his two-run double and Langley added a run-scoring single to his RBI ground out. Brown struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings, scattering nine hits and five runs, with only one run earned. Patterson got the final out on a strikeout with the tying run at the plate for a save. For New Brockton, Will Adkins had three hits and an RBI, while both Landin Norris and Gavin Hand had two hits each with Norris driving in a run.Nolan Fair had three hits and drove in five runs and Hunter Rowland had two hits and two runs batted in, including an inside-the-park homer, to lead the Lions. Victor Horton, Dalton Thorne and Hayden Barber all added two hits with Horton driving in two runs and Thorne one run. Brayson Stephenson added a hit and two runs batted in and Isaiah Strickland had a hit and an RBI. Cameron Noblitt pitched 1 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking four, while allowing one run and no hits. Fair pitched the last 2 1/3 innings, striking out seven, walking two and allowing one hit. For the Warriors, Levi Parrish had a single in the fourth and final inning and Kaiden Scott drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Chris Bui, who was hit by a pitch.The Rebels earned 15 hits with every player earning at least one in the Class 2A, Area 3 win. Joseph LeGear was 3-for-3 with a triple and four runs batted in, John Foster Hamm was 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and Weston Watson was 3-for-4 with one RBI to lead Zion Chapel. Gunnar Jacobs had two hits with one RBI and Brodie Stinson had a hit and two RBI.Lakeside 5-12, Hope Christian 2-2Conner Britton starred in game one, belting a pair of two-run homers for a two-hit, four RBI game. Trenton Hayes had a single, double and drove in one run and Taylor-Mark Bullock had two doubles and Brayden Vachon had a single and a triple.In game two, Boston Brown had two doubles and drove in four runs and Hardnett had two hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs to lead Lakeside. Hayes, Luke McGowan, Jack Giles and Vachon all added a hit and an RBI.Fairhope TournamentThe Wildcats bounced back from their first loss of the season on Thursday with a 2-1 win over Barlett thanks to a seventh-inning run. With the game tied 1-1 going into the top of the seventh, Enterprise’s Brady Cavanaugh drew a walk to open the Wildcats’ inning. After a pop out, Cavanaugh stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Walker Turner followed with an RBI double to put EHS in front.Gavin Maund had a run-scoring double for Enterprise’s other run.Kaden Hirsch was the winning pitcher in relief, throwing an inning of hitless and scoreless ball in the sixth inning. Richardson picked up a save in the seventh.
