David Mundee Two new sports are coming to Carroll High and one to both Enterprise and Charles Henderson in the upcoming school year.
“Mrs. Williams, our principal, was really interested in having these sports, so we put out an interest survey ,” Cammack said of the starting point for the two sports at Carroll. “It took off from there. We had a lot of interest for wrestling. There was not as much interest in cross country, but enough to get it started.”
Carroll becomes the fifth program in the Wiregrass to have wrestling as a sport. Dothan, Enterprise, Charles Henderson, Houston Academy and Northside Methodist Academy are the other schools with the sport. Popeney said 10-15 students expressed interest in cross county during a spring interest meeting but hopes a few others might join the program before the fall.
Trawick said during a recent interest meeting at the school that “50 something girls showed up,” and close to 40 came to tryouts. He said the roster will be trimmed some more before the season. Charles Henderson is adding flag football as well this fall. Hambrite said 16-20 girls are expected to participate. Lakenya Knight, who coaches girls basketball at the school, has been named the head coach of the program.
