"She genuinely felt she was in danger. The paranoia set in when she kind of let her mind spin off: 'What if somebody wants to kidnap me?' After they got married, it just escalated and escalated and escalated," Sasha Chermayeff, a college friend of JFK Jr.,."John was five years older. And being followed, it’s very different for a 200-lb. man than for a woman alone. By then she was thinking, 'They’re spying on me. They’re stalking me. Now my life is being afraid.
JFK Jr.'s passion is what ultimately led to his and Carolyn's demise—on July 16, 1999, JFK Jr. piloted a plane that he, Carolyn, and her sister Lauren Bessette were taking to the wedding of his cousin Rory to Mark Bailey at the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. The trip, which was to make a stop at the Martha's Vineyard Airport for Lauren, would never reach its destination as the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean before landing.
