The Carolina Panthers are parting ways with several defensive coaches after a season that saw the team allow a record-breaking 534 points.
Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich declined to comment on potential staff changes when asked about them. However, he confirmed that the team will be parting ways with safeties coach Bert Watts, outside linebackers coach Tem Lukabu, and defensive assistant Bobby Maffei. Lukabu previously served as the defensive coordinator at Boston College, where he led the Eagles to strong defensive performances in 2021 and 2022.
Watts had limited NFL coaching experience, previously serving as a staff assistant for the Denver Broncos in 2012 and returning as the outside linebackers coach under Ejiro Evero in 2022. He followed Evero to Carolina in 2023. This season, Carolina's defense surrendered a record-breaking 534 points, surpassing the previous NFL record of 533 held by the Baltimore Colts in 1981
