LGBTQ leader chides City Council: 'You have failed to reach out, to partner and engage with our community'
Leaders of North County’s LGBTQ+ community rejected the Carlsbad City Council’s Pride Month proclamation Tuesday because of the city’s refusal to fly the rainbow flag.
“Nothing that you pointed out is what any cities in this county or around the U.S. have experienced,” he said. “Two days later the Carlsbad Unified School District followed your example and put on a show of disregard and disrespect toward their students and educators by coming up with the same excuses.”
The City Council voted 3-2 on May 23, with Mayor Keith Blackburn and Councilmember Melanie Burkholder opposed, on a policy that would have allowed the display of commemorative flags, including the Pride flag, at City Hall. The proposal needed four votes to pass, and Blackburn said it was “fraught with issues and problems.”
“The only theology we care about is ‘Love thy neighbor,’” Shockley said. “Love thy neighbor as thyself, not make thy neighbor unto thyself.” The Chula Vista Elementary School District board voted 4-1 last week to fly the rainbow Pride flag at district headquarters on Harvey Milk Day and during June and October.
