“It’s probably one of the best, if not the best, left-handed sliders I’ve ever seen.”
GLENDALE, Ariz. — It was all chirps, laughs, “a little junk talk” and smiles for Carlos Rodón as he started his Giants career with a spring start against the White Sox, his old team.
Rodón got nine swings and misses on his 40 pitches, with most coming on his fastball, which sat between 96-98 miles per hour throughout the outing. Three of the four strikeouts came via the high fastball and the was on his slider, which had Giants catcher Curt Casali gushing after the start. “I was joking but kind of not joking with Tim Anderson out there, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him swing through three straight fastballs before,” Casali said. “That guy’s a great hitter, he’s got some of the best hand-eye coordination there is. He’s a perennial batting champ, and for him to miss three straight is indicative of how good Carlos’ stuff was today.”
“I think it was cool that, even though it wasn’t particularly great today, he kept throwing it and kept throwing it to kind of see if he could get it,” Casali said. “That shows the fearlessness of him, that he doesn’t mind trying it on a bigger stage like this spring training. I think he’ll throw it until he gets it, and it can be a useful weapon for him.”
Casali said he couldn’t repeat some of the things he heard, but said it’s “hard not to” enjoy facing your former team and teammates.
