Former Astros star Carlos Correa agrees to deal with Twins after Mets' offer falls apart
Carlos Correa waves to the crowd before the start of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022 in Houston.Carlos Correa is on the move again and this time, he's headed back to where he spent all of last season.
The former Astros star and the Minnesota Twins are finalizing a six-year, $200 million contract, according to multiple reports.. The Twins' home opener is April 6 against the Astros.agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract with the Giants in December. The Giants called off a press conference to announce the signing when they raised concerns about what his physical showed about his right leg, which he fractured in the minor leagues in 2014. With his deal in San Francisco in doubt, Correa pivoted to the Mets, before their physical also raised questions about the shortstop's leg.
The new deal with the Twins is $150 million short of the Giants' original offer, but it is for significantly more money per season. While the Giants' contract would have paid him $26.9 million per season and the Mets' deal had an annual value of $26.25 million, Correa will be making $33.3 million per season in Minnesota, which is the second-most for a shortstop behind only the Mets' Francisco Lindor .
They certainly wound up having an effect on the deal's length, although Correa's average annual salary of $33.3 million will be the second highest at the position, behind Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, whom Correa had planned on playing next to at third base. The deal falls short in total dollars of the 11-year deals signed by fellow shortstops Trea Turner and Xander Bogaerts this winter but trails only Judge's nine-year, $360 million contract in annual value.
