Alcaraz is off and running in his pursuit of a third straight grand slam tournament title, defeating Li Tue in four sets in his opening round matchup Tuesday. The 21-year-old Spaniard has three singles titles this season after winning six last season, most notably winning the French Open and Wimbledon before falling to Novak Djokovic in the gold medal match at the 2024 Olympics and suffering an upset loss in his opener at the Cincinnati Open in his most recent tournament.
Van De Zandschulp is a 28-year-old pro from the Netherlands still looking for the first singles tournament victory of his career. He has an 11-18 record this season and arrives in the second round of the U.S. Open after defeating Denis Shapovalov in straight sets in his opening match.
