Canadian author Carley Fortune's novel Every Summer After, inspired by her childhood in Barry's Bay, has been adapted into an eight-episode series titled Every Year After, released on Prime Video. The novel, published in May 2022, was written during the pandemic with influences from Taylor Swift's Folklore album.
It’s an epiphany that came about years ago, as she re-read her journals from growing up in Barry’s Bay in Canada. A lake town — population, 1,084 — Fortune grew up down a dirt road in the woods.
Her summers were spent in the waters of Kamaniskeg Lake, reading books on her dock and working at her parents’ restaurant. On her street, three of the houses, like Fortune’s, were lived in year-round. The rest were used by cottagers, people who visited the lake with the seasons. The main character of Fortune’s debut novel, “Every Summer After,” is one of those cottagers.
Persephone Fraser spends her summers in Barry’s Bay and the rest of the year in Toronto. At 13 years old, she meets Sam Florek, who lives full time at the lake.m in an interview.

Now it’s headed to the small screen, with an eight-episode series adaptation, retitled “Every Year After,” which dropped on Prime Video June 10. As the story comes to life before Fortune’s eyes, she’s thinking of the girl on the lake who was so desperately “longing for someone to really understand” her.
“EVERY YEAR AFTER” COMES six years after Fortune, a former journalist and editor, started working on the novel. In the acknowledgements, she writes that the impulse came in July 2020, from existential trains of thought spurned by the COVID-19 pandemic. That same month, Taylor Swift suddenly dropped a brand new album, “Folklore,” an experimental endeavor into an indie and folk sound and a wooded aesthetic. It was Fortune’s “Taylor Swift gateway album.
” Fortune is based in Toronto, but her family lived at the lake all summer during the pandemic, she says. She’d take long walks through the woods, listening specifically to “Folklore” and Fiona Apple’s April 2020 album “Fetch the Bolt Cutters. ” She describes them as a soundtrack of rebellion.
“I felt so — like I was doing something I wasn’t supposed to,” Fortune says. “I felt so rebellious in writing my novel because I was doing something for myself. And I was doing something that I thought people would think I was really, like, punching above my weight by writing a book. I thought people … if I had told someone, they would be like, ‘Oh you?
You think you can write a novel? ’ “I felt like I was reclaiming my creativity,” she adds.
“I had this righteous sense of indignation, and I was like rebelling against nothing. ” It’s the exact kind of angsty, raw, exposed-nerve-ending emotion that Fortune let bubble up and over as she wrote “Every Summer After. ” “What I realized reading the journals … and then writing, is how close to younger versions of myself I am. I can really sit with my teenage self and where she was at the time,” Fortune says.
“Reading the journals brought her and I so much closer together. ” "Every Year After" captures the "nostalgia that I felt when I was writing the book," Carley Fortune says. Young Carley was “very, very lonely,” she says. She felt crushes deeply and faced conflict with other girls her age.
She wanted to be seen and understood, a feeling that acts as an “emotional pin” that she can return to and sit in even now at 42. The resulting love story at the heart of “Every Summer After” Percy and Sam is a gift to young Carley, she says, asked to imagine how her teenage self would react to seeing the show adaptation.
“I think my teenage self would feel so seen by it,” Fortune says. “What I was writing, I think in the past storylines, like the sweet moments and the burgeoning romance, was kind of what teenage Carley wanted. ”
