The U.S. Attorney's office, along with other city officials reviewed the Philadelphia carjacking taskforce's impact two years in.
Philadelphia created a taskforce to crack down on carjackings in the city, and Friday, leaders provided an update on its impact over the past two years.
U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Jaqueline Romero, Special Agent in Charge, ATF Philadelphia Field Division Eric DeGree, FBI Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Wayne Jacobs and Philadelphia Police Department Commissioner Kevin Bethel were all in attendance for the press conference.
"Carjackings in the city this past year were down 31% from 2022," Romero said."From 1,311 to 900 in 2023. And so far in 2024, from January through this week, there have been 62 carjackings in Philadelphia."Sign up for NBC Philadelphia newsletters. "These defendants routinely receive sentences of 7 to 15 years," said Romero."And can even face up to a lifetime of imprisonment in some cases."
Officials said Kensington is a main area of concern, but law enforcement will focus on 10 districts across the city."As you know, we are going to work on significant effort in Kensington. I think oftentimes, we know it to be an open-air drug market; it is one of the most violent pockets in the city of Philadelphia as well," Bethel said."And so, I already met with my federal colleagues to really outline what our strategy will be.
