A high speed chase of carjacking suspects, linked to a homicide on Sunday night, ended with a fiery crash that killed two suspects in San Leandro, sheriff's officials said.
Deputies tried to stop the Camry, but the suspects "failed to yield," exited the freeway and went on to San Leandro, where police used so-called Stop Sticks at Davis and Preda streets to try and halt the vehicle.
"The driver of the vehicle tried to evade those stop sticks and go around but ultimately collided head on with a tree," sheriff's investigators said.A third person, described as a 14-year-old girl, was in a rear passenger seat, and sheriff’s officials said deputies managed to free her from the car. "The other two people were not able to get out before the vehicle was engulfed," sheriff's officials said. Investigators said the men "were on the commission of a carjacking" and that a firearm was found inside the vehicle.
Officials added that it’s unclear at the moment if the gun was associated with the killing in Manteca on Sunday night. Davis Street between Orchard Avenue and Pierce Avenue was closed in both directions for several hours early Monday morning.
