KOTA KINABALU: A local cargo ship was stranded in Pulau Kalampunian waters in the Kudat district due to a faulty navigational device early Sunday morning (Sept 8).

According to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency , a report was received about the vessel encountering difficulty at 5.10am while making its way to Kemaman, Terengganu from Sandakan.

However, all the crew members, totalling 15 individuals, are safe and there was also no oil spillage from the vessel registered in Kuching, Sarawak, said the MMEA Kudat Maritime Zone corporate communication unit in a statement.“The MMEA has alerted Sabah Ports and Harbour Department and Sabah Parks about this, and the cargo ship agent has also filed a report of the incident to the Marine Department in Kota Kinabalu.

“Preliminary reports found the cause of the ship being stranded was due to damage to the vessel’s navigation equipment, and the ship agent will handle the towing process,” said Kudat Maritime Zone director Commander Boon Chin Chau.
