Cargo crunch fueled by homebound pandemic-era consumers is over, officials say, but flow is returning to 2020 levels, with moderate growth likely ahead.
The anticipated port “peak” season is looking more like a plateau this year, Mario Cordero, executive director of the Port of Long Beach, said during a virtual news conference on Wednesday, May 31.
The 2022 queue of ships waiting outside the harbor “is long gone,” Cordero said. The cargo backed up during the pandemic as folks confined to their homes went on a buying spree for items such as furniture and appliances. That trend has now cooled, thus the decline in cargo flow. April, Cordero noted, was “the best month since October 2022. Cargo was still down 20% from the prior April, but it did catch our eye.”
