Starting Oct. 1, a different type of court proceeding will begin in the central courthouse and several other courthouses around San Diego County.

The Community Assistance, Recovery and Empowerment Act court proceedings will roll out as part of a pilot program targeting people in the community struggling with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders so they can get the voluntary treatment they may need to stay on the right track.

It's important to note that the program does not cover other mental illnesses, such as anxiety disorders, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. If they meet the criteria, the court would further investigate and report back to see if they need to create a CARE Act case.Once that plan is accepted, the person would be connected with voluntary treatment, medication and a housing plan.
