Thanks to tireless work by the two nurse runners, Kurt Niederloh was able to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding. NationalNursesDay ❤️

. “I was fortunate to have them [Goble and Hartung] there. If they hadn't been there, I don't think we'd be talking right now.”

Shortly after he collapsed, Niederloh’s son Alex and Goble, a women’s health care nurse practitioner, both happened to run towards him at the spot where the half and 10K courses merged. In shock, Alex rushed to his father’s side as Goble’s training kicked in.“He was gone, he was not breathing, he didn’t have a pulse. I rolled him on his back and started doing CPR.”

After 10 minutes of CPR, a police officer arrived with an automated external defibrillator . Goble and Hartung gave him one shock with the AED, which prompted Niederloh’s heart to start beating again. In fact, data collected in 2014 found that nearly 45 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims survived when bystander CPR was administered. However, the majority of cardiac arrest survivors have some degree of brain injury and impaired consciousness.

Niederloh’s surgery took place on a Saturday. He woke up that Monday, and recovered well enough to be released on Wednesday. He even went for a five-mile walk the next day.
