Birkin is more than a bag. Few pieces inspire as much devotion as the French brand’s classic leather holdall. Its namesake, Jane Birkin, may no longer wear the style—she auctioned off the original version designed for her in 1984 by Hermés’s then-chairman Jean-Louis Dumas to benefit AIDS research—but plenty of celebrities have stepped up to claim the title of resident aficionado. Beloved by a diverse group of stars it remains a status symbol nearly four decades after its debut.
The variety within her collection is admirable. With everything from a 35cm croc model in Bleu Electrique to one of spring/summer 2020’s striped version of the minimalist Sellier Birkin style, Cardi’s selection speaks to her love of color, detail, and rarity. Fashion collectors often speak of the high that comes with new acquisitions, and Cardi has been vocal on social media about the thrill she gets each time she picks up a new Birkin. While she isn’t the only celebrity with an eye for Hermés, as, Victoria Beckham, and Kylie Jenner all have extensive collections, Cardi appears to be focused on Birkins in particular. Though you’ll spot a couple of Kellys resting on her shelf, she has been relatively consistent with her purchases.
