The tragic deaths of three young women at a Belize resort are under renewed investigation as authorities explore the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning. families plead for answers and transparency as the resort temporarily closes.

Authorities in Belize are scrutinizing the possibility that carbon monoxide poisoning may have contributed to the deaths of three young women found in their hotel room last month. As the families of the deceased issued a statement Monday demanding answers one month after the tragic discovery, the country's top police official disclosed that the resort has temporarily suspended operations.

'It was agreed a second round of testing be done at the hotel,' Police Commissioner Chester Williams stated last week during an impromptu news conference captured on video by a local television station. Williams revealed that previous guests had come forward reporting suspicions of unusually high carbon monoxide levels during their own stays at Royal Kahal Beach Resort. 'While they were here, they had done some carbon monoxide testing and they had detected some carbon monoxide,' Williams explained.Carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless gas, is produced during the combustion processes of gasoline engines, gas and oil-burning furnaces, generators, and charcoal grills. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this silent killer claims the lives of hundreds annually in the United States. The three women, identified as Wafae El Arar, 26; Imane Mallah, 24; and Kaoutar Naqqad, 23, were found deceased in their hotel room on February 22nd. After two days of unsuccessful attempts to contact the women, hotel staff entered the room and made the grim discovery, as stated by Williams. In a statement released Monday through their spokesperson, the women's families expressed profound alarm over reports suggesting dangerously high carbon monoxide levels within the hotel and the resort's sudden closure without public explanation. 'We believe the families of all guests — past and future — deserve a clear explanation for this action,' the statement declared. Williams initially revealed that alcohol and gummies were found in the room, and each body was discovered near vomit. He did not specify the type of gummies; the confection is commonly consumed as a concentrated cannabis product in states where it is legal. On Monday, the families asserted in their statement that they believe the deaths are suspicious and are urging authorities to uncover the 'full truth.' Williams confirmed that the resort could reopen upon receiving authorization from government authorities. Requests for comment from the general manager of Royal Kahal, police, and other Belize officials went unanswered Monday night. Bert Nowak, the resort's general manager, expressed condolences to the families in an interview last month, stating that the women were on their second day of a week-long stay. After initially stating that the Belize National Forensic Science Service would determine the cause and manner of death, the bodies were transferred to the women's home state of Massachusetts. A spokesperson for the Massachusetts chief medical examiner's office stated via email Monday that the cause and manner of death are pending and could take more than two months to determine
