Charlie McNeill had a Sheffield Wednesday debut to remember with his quick-fire double seeing off Hull City, and sending the Owls into the second round of the Carabao Cup.Marvin Mehlem replied for the hosts in the ninth minute, with McNeill grabbing his second just seconds after Hull’s leveller to put the Owls back in front.
Wednesday, who made 11 changes to their side, were quickest out of the blocks in a blistering opening 10 minutes at MKM Stadium.Pol Valentin’s cross was touched on by Michael Smith, with McNeill lashing the ball into the back of the net in off the bar.Wednesday continued to push for a second, but it was Hull who grabbed the next goal in the pulsating match between the two Championship rivals.But Hull City’s joy was short-lived.
Hull responded with their own period of pressure. Tyrell Sellars-Fleming diverted the ball into the net to seemingly equalise for the Tigers in the 17th minute, only for the linesman to raise his flag for an offside.There was to be no hat-trick for McNeill, who made way for Bailey Cadamarteri just before the hour mark.
