A car bomb exploded on the outskirts of Manbij, a city in northern Syria, on Monday, killing at least 19 people, almost all of them women. The blast occurred next to a vehicle carrying agricultural workers, leaving 15 women wounded. The victims included 18 women and a male nurse, according to hospital staff. This marks the seventh car bomb ing in Manbij in just over a month.
The city, located in Aleppo province, has been grappling with violence even after the fall of President Bashar Assad in December. The area is contested between Turkish-backed factions known as the Syrian National Army and the U.S.-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. The Syrian National Army seized control of Manbij from the SDF in early December during a rapid offensive. A resident of Manbij described the car that detonated as being parked on the roadside. The recurring attacks have heightened residents' vigilance, leading them to take measures like setting up surveillance cameras and focusing on neighborhood protection. Munir Mustafa, the deputy director of civil defense, warned that these attacks in Aleppo province pose a significant threat to Syria's efforts to achieve post-war security and economic recovery. Most of the explosions have taken place at night, further escalating the sense of fear and insecurity among the population.
