But this morning Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said such reports were ‘completely misleading as will become apparent on Thursday.’ Captain Tom, originally from Keighley, West Yorkshire, had first set out to raise just £1,000 for NHS Charities Together by completing lengths of his garden before he turned 100. Captain Tom was conscripted into the army to fight in World War Two at the age of 20. He joined the 8th Battalion of The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, with whom he was sent to Cornwall to defend the coast as the threat of a German invasion loomed. He was then selected for officer training, and quickly rose up through the ranks to become captain. In 1941, he was enlisted to India and the journey to Bombay took six weeks by sea.
