Alyssa Wong, Jan Bazaldua, and Bryan Valenza's Captain Marvel #1 wastes no time jumping into the action, with Captain Marvel almost instantly finding herself attacked by a new foe: the mysterious, raven-like Omen, who quickly drags Carol into the Negative Zone. Shortly after, super-thief Yuna Yang attempts to break into Rick Jones/Genis-Vell's apartment to steal the Nega-Bands only to be beaten to the punch by Omen, who attempts to take the bands by cutting off Genis-Vell's hands.
Unable to withstand Captain Marvel's might, Omen flees with Genis-Vell's body. Carol and Yuna resolve to work together to figure out what is happening, but elsewhere Omen revives and corrupts Genis-Vell, placing the hero under her control.The Nega-Bands are an ancient Kree artifact tied closely to Captain Marvel's legacy.
The Nega-Bands Could Play a Role in The Marvels This "switching places" element is the hallmark of the Nega-Bands as well as the main conceit of the MCU film The Marvels, in which Captain Marvel , Photon and Ms. Marvel find themselves swapping places and powers each time they try to use their own abilities.
With all of this in place, it makes sense that the Nega-Bands would resurface in Carol's title: with the first issue of Captain Marvel releasing just over two weeks before The Marvels hits theaters, reintroducing readers to the Nega-Bands and their place-swapping powers is a way to help prep audiences to understand the mechanics and inspiration for the film's events.
