Yet before the galaxy can be saved, Kirk must fight off the Klingons. Star Trek: The Last Starship #3 was written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Adrián Bonilla. Kirk bravely led the Enterprise and her crew through a historic five-year mission that cemented his place as a legend. Kirk was regarded as a highly ethical and compassionate captain, albeit one with maverick tendencies. KIrk’s predilection to breaking the rules put him at odds with his superiors. Kirk’s story seemingly came to an end in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations, but like any good legend, he refuses to go gently. Kirk’s story seemingly came to an end in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations, but like any good legend, he refuses to go gently. In The Last Starship’s first issue, Agnes Jurati and her renegade Borg revive Kirk in the 31st century, nearly 700 years after he vanished. Kirk is given a bold new mission: keep the Federation’s legacy alive in its darkest hour. The Burn Devastated the Star Trek Universe, But Kirk Is Going to Make it Right Galactic Civilization Fell After the Burn In the opening pages of Star Trek: The Last Starship #1, galactic civilization comes to a grinding halt in the aftermath of “the Burn.” First mentioned in Discovery’s third season, the Burn destroyed and destabilized the galaxy’s dilithium supply. Dilithium crystals are vital components of warp drive, and without them, everything falls apart. Kirk’s mission, as revealed in The Last Starship #2, is to weaponize his legacy and become a rallying symbol for a broken and defeated galaxy. The Last Starship’s first three issues show the horrors visited upon the galaxy after the Burn, and it gives readers an idea of what Kirk is up against. Saving the galaxy and preserving the Federation’s legacy is Kirk’s biggest mission to date, and as seen in The Last Starship #3, he just might be the person for the job. Kirk is still processing his resurrection a few days prior, but still manages to assert command of the bridge crew, who were all unknown to him. Even though Kirk manages to help deescalate a situation with the Klingons, the galaxy is still a massive and terrifying place, full of challenges and wonders for Kirk during his grand return to the Star Trek franchise. Yet Kirk earned his legend as a Starfleet icon, and this issue reminds readers of why.
