Return of Super-Soldier...
It seems unlikely that DC and Marvel will ever get the chance to cross over again, but there was a time when the two companies combined their characters into the Amalgam Comics universe. Now, artist Mayday Trippe updates many of those classic designs of the nineties in fan art that reflects newer versions of the combined heroes.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Shared via Tumblr, Mayday Trippe has posted a number of impressive Amalgam designs, many of them involving the Amalgam character of Superman and Captain America's combined form Super-Soldier. Created by Mark Waid and Dave Gibbons, Super-Soldier is in actuality reporter Clark Kent, who was given the super-soldier formula during WWII.
Equally cool is Mayday Trippe’s Kingdom X Super-Soldier, combing the Superman from Kingdom Come and Captain America from Earth X. It’s a fitting combination, as both Kingdom Come and Earth X were the brainchild of artist Alex Ross. Now these incredible designs are fused into a proposed Amalgam storyline Trippe pitches as Kingdom X.
The final design is for a character Trippe calls Secret-Soldier. The influence on this costume that most immediately stands out is the infamous Superman Blue design from the late '90s. In the controversial Superman Red/Superman Blue storyline, the Man of Steel loses his familiar solar-based powers and gains electric energy-based powers. After gaining a new suit to contain these new abilities, he is split into two separate entities, Superman Red and Superman Blue.
Given the corporate culture at Marvel and DC these days, any future Amalgam comics seem unlikely, but thanks to artists like Mayday Trippe, the Amalgam heroes live on to fight another day.
