Washington is back in playoff position after an impressive 3-0 win over Winnipeg.
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin beats Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck in the third period Sunday afternoon at Capital One Arena. Outplayed from start to finish by a faster, heavier, better team, the Capitals left Canada Life Centre with a newfound appreciation for just how difficult their path to the playoffs was going to be.
“Just win the game,” defenseman John Carlson, who scored the game-winner at 1:21 of the third, recalled as Carbery’s directive. “Doesn’t matter what happened in the first two periods. They weren’t atrocious, but they were not up to our standard, a little lackluster. Given the gravity of the situation, I think we would say that we weren’t too proud of it.
“This team gives us some serious issues — or did in that game in their building,” he said Sunday morning. “We need to be very cognizant of the things that they do well.”during an emotional pregame ceremony, the Capitals hung with the Jets over the opening 20 minutes. Both teams had moments of brilliance offensively and stretches of difficulty defensively, but neither side was able to find the net.
Ovechkin’s first goal, which came just over two minutes after Carlson scored, was something of a fluke, but fluky goals seem to come when a player is on this kind of hot streak. After center Connor McMichael won a faceoff, Ovechkin and McMichael swatted at the bouncing puck; Ovechkin touched it last, and the puck redirected off a Winnipeg player before slowly trickling through Hellebuyck and across the goal line.Ovechkin’s second goal was more fitting for his highlight reel.
