CALGARY — The Washington Capitals headed into Monday’s game at Scotiabank Saddledome knowing exactly what was at stake.
A subdued first period played into the Capitals’ hands; on the final stop of the trip, a frenetic opening frame was not something the visitors sought. Sixteen seconds later, Strome found the back of the net off a cross-ice feed from defenseman Rasmus Sandin for his 23rd goal of the season. The Flames looked to have scored shortly after Ovechkin’s second tally, but officials ruled the puck did not fully cross the line. Kevin Rooney made up for the review not going Calgary’s way with a redirection at the side of the net at 10:41, less than 90 seconds after Ovechkin scored.The Capitals unsuccessfully challenged Rooney’s tally for goaltender interference.
