Capital One experienced a widespread technical outage Thursday, impacting customer account access and causing problems with direct deposits. The bank acknowledged the issue, stating it stemmed from a third-party vendor, but provided no estimated timeline for service restoration. This outage follows a recent incident at Citibank where customers faced difficulties accessing their accounts via mobile devices and encountering issues with fraud alerts.

Capital One encountered a technical issue Thursday morning that disrupted customer account access and caused problems with direct deposits. Users took to social media platform X to report difficulties, prompting a Capital One representative to acknowledge a 'tech outage' affecting 'a variety of functions.' The company provided no estimated timeline for service restoration. Later in the day, Capital One issued an official statement on X confirming the problem.

It stated, 'We are experiencing a technical issue with a third-party vendor that is temporarily impacting some account services, deposits, and payment processing for portions of our consumer, small business, and commercial bank.' According to Downdetector.com, which monitors user complaints about digital services, the issues began around 6 a.m. ET Thursday, with approximately 2,000 reports recorded. By 9 a.m., the frequency of reports seemed to stabilize. A bank spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News. This incident follows a day earlier when Citibank acknowledged a problem hindering customers' access to their accounts from mobile devices, as well as an apparent issue with fraud alerts. While the mobile access issue appeared to be resolved, a Citi representative stated on X Thursday that they were still working to address the fraud-alert problem. Earlier this month, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau filed a lawsuit against Capital One, alleging that the bank misled customers about its savings account offerings. Capital One has refuted these allegations. This is a developing story and will be updated

CFPB Sues Capital One for Allegedly Deceiving Consumers on Savings Account Interest RatesCFPB Sues Capital One for Allegedly Deceiving Consumers on Savings Account Interest RatesThe Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is suing Capital One for allegedly misleading millions of consumers and depriving them of over $2 billion in interest payments on savings accounts. The CFPB claims that Capital One promoted its 360 Savings accounts as having some of the nation's best interest rates but froze these rates at a low level even as national interest rates climbed. Simultaneously, Capital One introduced a similar product, the 360 Performance Savings account, with significantly higher interest rates. The CFPB alleges that Capital One deliberately hid the new product from existing 360 Savings accountholders, preventing them from accessing higher returns.
