Thousands of Capital One customers reported widespread issues accessing their accounts, deposits, and payment processing Thursday morning due to a technical outage. The outage, attributed to a third-party vendor, disrupted services for both consumer and business banking customers. While Capital One and the vendor are working to resolve the issue, there is no estimated time for restoration.
Frustrated Capital One customers took to social media Thursday morning to express their anger over widespread account access issues.
Users flooded X, formerly known as Twitter, with complaints, with one user stating, 'All I know is I better wake up to a direct deposit and an apology letter,' while another described the situation as 'absurd' and questioned, 'How can you treat your customers like this?' Capital One acknowledged the issue in a statement Thursday, revealing that a technical problem was disrupting customer access to accounts, deposits, and payment processing. The outage, which began around 6 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector.com, impacted approximately 2,000 users reporting problems at its peak. While the frequency of complaints began to lessen around 9 a.m., the situation left many customers frustrated and uncertain.Capital One confirmed that the outage stemmed from a technical issue involving a third-party vendor, Fidelity National Information Systems (FIS). FIS confirmed the outage in a statement to FOX 5, attributing it to a local power outage at one of its data centers. They emphasized that they are working diligently to restore the impacted applications as quickly as possible and apologized for the inconvenience caused to their clients and their customers. However, Capital One has not provided an estimated timeframe for the resolution of the issue. The specific nature of the technical problem remains unclear, and the total number of customers affected nationwide remains undisclosed. Capital One has also not revealed whether the outage has resulted in any security or fraud-related concerns. This recent outage follows a series of banking system disruptions in recent weeks. Just a day prior, Citibank experienced access issues with mobile accounts and ongoing problems with fraud alerts. Earlier this month, Capital One faced a lawsuit from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) alleging that the bank misled customers about savings accounts. Capital One has denied these allegations. As of Thursday afternoon, Capital One had not issued any further updates regarding the ongoing outage.
