An electrical transformer with an estimated value of approximately R600 000 was stolen from the City of Cape Town and successfully tracked down to a farm in Darling on the west coast last Friday.
The intention of the thieves was to dismantle the transformer in order to extract its copper components. After receiving information regarding its location, the City’s Metal Theft Unit notified their colleagues in the Swartland municipality, and they all converged on a store building on a farm.As the authorities approached the premises, a male suspect was seen fleeing but was quickly apprehended, according to Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
Smith revealed, ‘With 210 litres of the transformer oil already drained into plastic drums, the remaining components and switchgear had already been cut apart and was ready to be sold to scrap dealers.’Smith expressed great pride in the members of the City’s Metal Theft Unit, as well as the LEAP members and Metro Gang and Drug Task Team.
He also acknowledged the crucial role that the general public played in providing the information that resulted in the arrests. He emphasised, ‘Crime intelligence is an important aspect of any crime-fighting organisation.’ Drawing inspiration from the teachings of Sun Tzu, he highlighted the significance of protecting and respecting spies during times of battle.
