The Bitou Municipality of Cape Town has confirmed that its beaches are safe for recreational use despite the recent rabies outbreak among Cape Fur seals. In June, rabies was detected in Cape Fur seals, a species where rabies had not been previously noted. Plettenberg Bay , a popular holiday destination, has seen four confirmed rabies cases and one suspected case in its seal population of around 8,000.
Following the outbreak, the municipality has participated in a national rabies-response workshop and has implemented systems for the quick and safe removal of seal carcasses. Chanel Visser, a senior marine field ranger for CapeNature and coordinator of the Plett Marine Animal Stranding Network, emphasized the importance of minimizing the risk of exposure to rabies by avoiding any interaction with seals. The municipality has temporarily amended the dogs-on-beaches by-law to ensure that all dogs remain leashed at all times on Plett beaches, reducing the chance of encounters with infected seals
