You know a story is incredible when there are multiple versions of it.
Cape Fear is another iteration of John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel The Executioners, which has already been adapted twice, including the 1962 movie starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum and the 1991 movie starring Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte. In Apple TV's version, which just premiered last week, the story follows Anna Bowden and her husband, Tom , who first met as attorneys working on the same case nearly two decades ago.

'Cape Fear' Has Immediately Set Itself Apart From Apple TV's Other Shows From the very opening of Nick Antosca's Cape Fear, it's clear that the Apple TV miniseries is embracing a completely new aesthetic. The first episode begins with the Bowden family enjoying a nice swim in their pool, but the picture is rendered in a negative image, as though it's been filmed using thermal cameras.
This technique instantly informs the viewer that they're not tuning into an average thriller, but it also suffuses the moment with tension. This feeling travels throughout every scene, conveyed with desaturated close-ups that convey a sense of claustrophobia. Flashback sequences shot in black and white also set the tone for multiple timelines in an effortless yet effective way.
The look of Cape Fear is primarily thanks to the incredibly talented cinematographers responsible for the show, Eben Bolter and Celiana Cárdenas . In an interview with Indiewire, Bolter noted that every shot is intentional to tell the narrative more interestingly and truthfully, saying: "We wanted to use long lens and zoom photography to create the sense that someone's watching, that there's a presence far away.
And we wanted to introduce Max from behind, like a panther hunting his prey.
" It's not just the camera angles that make Cape Fear unique; the miniseries looks much more cinematic than other television shows, with sweeping panoramic shots and shocking bursts of color. Most notably, neon green shows up aggressively in unexpected moments, whether it be via a glowing swimming pool at night or a hanging hospital curtain. The series' eerie Southern Gothic aesthetic also results in a palpable perception of the setting's humidity practically emanating off the screen.
