The coalition said that more than 150 people were shot dead in various Cape Flats areas in the last three months.
CAPE TOWN - The Cape Crime Crisis Coalition has raised concern about rising levels of gang-related crime on the Cape Flats.
Cape Crime Crisis Coalition chairperson, Llewellyn MacMaster:"The state, its law enforcement agencies and the political parties have failed and continue to fail in fulfilling its constitutional mandate to protect its citizens from harm." MacMaster said that the coalition would be formulating a provincial safety plan, led by citizens and civil society, in 2025.
"We are therefore at one with the Cape Flats Safety Forum, Gun Free SA, Balls Not Guns and community members who have called for a comprehensive and sustainable plan to remove firearms from society." Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, said that she was working with police, anti-crime organisations and civil society to overcome gangsterism in the province.
