Branch is in his sixth season overall at Caney Creek. That’s important. Players learning how he disciplined, reacted to things and coached wasn’t a big adjustment.“I’m going to coach them hard and hold them accountable,” Branch said. “That’s all part of getting better. Now the kids know there’s zero tolerance for making excuses and being mediocre.”“This is probably the most athletic team I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” said Branch, who started at Caney Creek in 2017. “We did a lot of playing.
“We’re going to be highly competitive, and teams are going to have to play us for 32 minutes. If we do everything we’re supposed to do and execute, we have an opportunity to be victorious at the end of the day.” Branch’s emphasis is playing defense, particularly at the rim, and limiting turnovers to prevent easy transition looks for the opponent.
Branch graduated nine seniors from last year’s team. The vast majority of this year’s Panthers were on the junior varsity last season. “We’re young, inexperienced,” Branch said. “We have eight seniors. That’s the thing for us is they leave in bunches and they come in bunches. What I’ve done is reach down to the lower levels and develop those guys quickly, so when guys move on, I don’t have to work as hard to bridge that gap.The two returners are seniors Ethan Lozano and Justin McCord.
