A San Antonio City Council candidate's attempt to experience police work firsthand took a harrowing turn when she was caught in the middle of an active shooter incident.
A woman's ride-along with a San Antonio Police Department officer took an unexpected turn when they responded to an active shooter call where officers were shot and wounded. Patty Gibbons, a District 1 City Council candidate, participated in SAPD's Citizen on Patrol program for the first time. She was paired with SAPD Officer Brandon Martinez, a 28-year-old officer.
Gibbons chronicled her experience on Facebook, starting with routine calls such as a domestic violence incident, an arrest, and a trespass warning. As the night progressed, they encountered a man on the run and a fender bender at the North Star Mall. Around 8:30 p.m., they received a call about an officer being shot. Gibbons described the scene as intense, with officers surrounding the area where the shooter was located. Helicopters were in the air, and she could hear gunshots. She expressed her admiration for the officers' bravery and focus. Gibbons' Facebook posts documented the unfolding events, from the initial moments of the ride-along to the tense standoff with the active shooter. She shared photos of the police activity, the officers' equipment, and the overall chaotic scene. The next morning, she posted a photo of herself at a Whataburger, reflecting on the experience and expressing her gratitude for the officers' dedication to keeping the city safe
