PUBLISHED 6:35 PM EDT Sep. 04, 2022A manhunt continued Monday for two men suspected of stabbing to death 10 people in an Indigenous community and a nearby town in one of the deadliest mass killings in Canada's history. The stabbings took place in multiple locations on the James Smith Cree Nation and in the village of Weldon, northeast of Saskatoon, police said
Police, meanwhile, said a vehicle reportedly carrying the two suspects had been spotted about 335 kilometers south of the communities where the stabbings occurred. The suspects were identified as Damien Sanderson, 31, and Myles Sanderson, 30. Police wouldn't confirm if the two are related and gave few details about them.
The elected leaders of the three communities that make up the James Smith Cree Nation, including the Chakastaypasin Band and the Peter Chapman Band, declared a local state of emergency and opened two emergency operations centers. Last May, Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers issued a wanted list that included Myles Sanderson, writing that he was “unlawfully at large.”
Weldon residents have identified one of the victims as Wes Petterson. Ruby Works said the 77-year-old widower was like an uncle to her.
