Canada’s House of Commons speaker apologized Sunday for recognizing a 98-year-old ethnic Ukrainian who fought for a Nazi unit during World War II.
, in which he thanked Canada for its support in Ukraine’s war against Russia, Rota introduced Hunka as a war hero “who fought [for] the Ukrainian independence against the Russians, and continues to support the troops today.”
“The fact that a veteran who served in a Nazi military unit was invited to and given a standing ovation in Parliament is shocking,”the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies.
“In my remarks following the address of the President of Ukraine, I recognized an individual in the gallery. I have subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to do so,” Rota said in a. “I particularly want to extend my deepest apologies to Jewish communities in Canada and around the world. I accept full responsibility for my actions.”
