The Tumbler Ridge mass shooting is one of the deadliest in Canada's history. Follow Newsweek's latest updates.

The suspect in the mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, British Columbia, has been identified as Jesse Van Rootselaar, an 18-year-old trans woman. Rootselaar, who was biologically male at birth and later identified as female, had a license for their gun, RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said.

The victims include Rootselaar's mother and step-brother. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney appeared shaken as he arrived at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday, telling reporters it was a “very difficult day” for the nation. Carney then addressed the family of the victims, saying, “Parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers in Tumbler Ridge will wake up without someone they love. The nation mourns with you. Canada stands by you. The world is with you.“ He added that he had instructed flags on federal buildings to be flown at half mast for the next seven days. Ten people died and at least 27 others been injured when a suspect opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, British Columbia. The suspect, described as “female in a dress with brown hair,“ was found dead from “what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury,“ Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.
