Canada's ambassador to Washington, Kirsten Hillman, says Canada is prepared to increase its purchases from the United States, including its next submarine fleet, to appease President-elect Donald Trump's concerns about the US-Canada trade deficit.

Canada 's ambassador to Washington, Kirsten Hillman, stated on Monday that Canada is prepared to increase its purchases from the United States, including its next submarine fleet, to address President-elect Donald Trump 's concerns regarding the US- Canada trade deficit. In an interview with The Associated Press, Hillman also cautioned Americans that prices will likely rise for them almost immediately if Trump proceeds with his plan to impose tariffs on Canadian goods.

Trump has repeatedly characterized the US trade deficit with Canada, a resource-rich nation that supplies the US with commodities like oil, as a subsidy. Hillman emphasized that Canada purchases more from the United States than any other country and is willing to buy even more. \She highlighted that Canada is eager to source its needs from the US and pointed to upcoming large military procurements, such as replacing the entire submarine fleet, as potential opportunities. Hillman noted that 70% of Canada's military procurement already originates from the US, including a planned purchase of 88 F-35 fighter jets. She stated that Canada is open to exploring additional purchases from the US to narrow the trade gap. \Hillman acknowledged that the US had a $75 billion trade deficit with Canada last year but emphasized that a third of Canada's exports to the US consist of energy products. She stressed the importance of trade with Canada for the US economy, stating that it supports over 8 million jobs and that Canada is the number one customer for 36 US states. She also pointed out that Canada provides many primary materials essential for US manufacturing. Hillman warned that adding a 25% tariff to these products would immediately increase prices for Americans, especially at a time when the cost of living is already high. She argued that imposing tariffs would be counterproductive and harmful to both countries. Hillman reiterated Canada's stance that it would retaliate if tariffs were placed on Canadian goods, resulting in additional costs for Americans. She emphasized that Canada would not hesitate to defend its interests and respond forcefully to any unfair trade practices
