Canada selects Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and Ignace to host its first deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.
Multiple layers of protection, both engineered and natural, will ensure the used nuclear fuel is safely contained and isolated within the repository. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization has chosen Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace as the host communities for Canada’s first deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel .
The repository will provide a long-term solution for the safe management of used nuclear fuel, a byproduct of Canada’s nuclear power generation. The repository will be built at a depth of 2100-2600 feet , significantly deeper than the CN Tower is tall. This depth ensures that the used nuclear fuel is isolated from the environment and human activity.“A series of engineered and natural barriers will work together to safely contain and isolate used nuclear fuel within the repository,” explained NWMO’s
Through this process, communities had the opportunity to learn about the science behind the project and the potential impacts and benefits of hosting the repository.
