, leaving the U.S. as the remaining major holdout in keeping the planes in the air.Story Continued Below“It is something that has really viscerally caught the attention of Canadians,” Garneau said. [The ban] "will remain in place until further notice.”

Garneau said he notified U.S. authorities earlier today of the country's plans, but the U.S. "absolutely [did] not" lobby Canada to forgo a ban.Collectively, Air Canada and WestJet Airlines have more than three dozen MAX 8s in their fleet. Canada also banned the Boeing 737 MAX 9. Boeing maintains its planes are safe to fly.

“I will not hesitate to take swift action should we discover any additional safety issues,” Garneau said. Garneau said passengers are spooked by the similarities between the Ethiopian Airlines crash and the October 29 wreck of Lion Air Flight 610 in Indonesia, which killed all 189 people on board. Both crashed within minutes of takeoff, both struggled to gain altitude and both pitched downward several times before making the final plunge.
