, asked 244 adults to choose between ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ food items presented on a computer screen.Some of the participants were asked to watch a two minute video beforehand that advocated for healthy eating. Whenever respondents were asked to choose between the two food options, they were asked to either speak aloud to themselves in the first person or third person.
The research team found that those who spoke to themselves in the third person tended to make healthier choices compared to those who spoke in first person. Those who watched the video beforehand were found to make healthier choices even more so. “Findings indicated that dieters benefited the most from the combined use of distanced self-talk and a health prime [watching the video],” the authors wrote. “Non-dieters made healthier choices when using distanced self-talk, regardless of whether they were primed with a health goal or not. These findings suggest that distanced self-talk may constitute a self-control strategy that encourages healthier eating.
