Custom characters are central to Bethesda RPGs.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Bethesda's signature style results in RPGs with an incredible amount of player agency to embody a custom character and forge a story in almost any manner, and Starfield goes to great lengths to continue this tradition.

As the studio's largest game to date, there is a staggering amount of ways players can spend their time in the Settled Systems, and a robust skill tree with seemingly no level cap ensures that all manner of play styles are rewarded with meaningful progression. Perhaps the most important aspect to building a character in Starfield, however, is being able to change their appearance, both at character creation and with cosmetic items later in the game. Just like its Fallout and The Elder Scrolls predecessors, Starfield begins with custom character creation following a brief introductory sequence. All the expected options are present , letting the player create almost any in-game avatar they'd like through a series of presets for individual face components and a large number of sliders. Character creation doesn't necessarily have to stop there, however, as the Settled Systems has the means to alter anyone's appearance.Starfield Lets You Change Your Character's Appearance Roughly 300 years of technological growth has seemingly resulted in an impressive and cheap cosmetic surgery industry. Throughout the Settled Systems, a chain of genetic salons named Enhance! caters to anyone's appearance altering needs, and for only a small fee of 500 credits. Even very shortly into Starfield, 500 credits is an easily manageable sum, and Enhance! locations can be found in many major locations, including New Atlantis, capital of the United Colonies, and Neon, the effectively independent pleasure city. Starfield Lets You Change Your Name, Pronouns, & Body Type Too Parts of Starfield's character creation process involve setting the custom character's body type, including their gait and build, as well as their name and pronouns. All of these can be changed at Enhance! after the game has begun, not just the player character's face. Paying the 500 credits to purchase Enhance!'s services essentially just re-opens the character creation menu. Players won't have to worry about getting their character just right the first time, and those eager to simply play the game can rush through at the outset and not worry about being dissatisfied with their character for the game's entirety. Aside from simply wanting to try out a new look, Starfield making character creation almost freely available after a save file has already been started opens up plenty of interesting roleplaying opportunities. For instance, a player could visibly age their character by deepening lines and wrinkles on the face, and dulling and graying hair color as they play. It's also possible to create a trans character in Starfield who transitions throughout the game, even changing names and pronouns if the player wants. Customization options are always welcome in RPGs, and Starfield's inclusion of Enhance! to allow players to completely rebuild their character is a great way to ground such mechanics in-universe.
