It's believed the Yankees would love to work an offseason deal with the Padres for star outfielder Juan Soto, who is a year away from free agency and could be moved.
Juan Soto had a standout 2023 season playing for the Padres, batting .275 with 35 homers, 109 RBI, a league-high 132 walks and a .930 OPS in 162 games.
Playing all 162 games this year, Soto had another excellent season, batting .275 with 35 homers, 109 RBI, an NL high 132 walks and a .930 OPS. For his career, he’s already been to the All-Star Game three times. He’s won a batting title and was sensational when the Nationals beat the Astros in the 2019 World Series, hitting .333 with three homers and seven RBI in seven games.
On Wednesday, the second and final day of the GM Meetings, two men who will have a lot of influence on where Soto ends up took turns talking at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia. “With Juan, we’re going to have conversation with Scott and his group about what it looks like long term,” Preller said. “Our position-player team we think is very strong. Keeping that group together and adding to the pitching, that’s one plan.”
A deal might even be a sure thing, because the Padres reportedly may have to shave $50 million from their $250 million 2023 payroll due to lost revenues from a television contract that died.
