Will Tim Tszyu be able to back up the boast that his family will become boxing’s greatest? Not according to Cory Spinks, whose clan has its own strong claim.
Comments made by Tim Tszyu in the lead-up to his title fight against Sebastian Fundora, about his family becoming the greatest in boxing history, have raised the eyebrows of Cory Spinks.
Leon Spinks and his brother Michael both won gold medals at the Montreal Olympics. Leon became the heavyweight champion after defeating the great Ali, while Michael held world championships in two world classes, including the undisputed light heavyweight title from 1983 to 1985, and the lineal heavyweight title from 1985 to 1988.
Spinks is uniquely qualified to compare the respective family legacies. He and Kostya boast wins over superstar southpaw Zab Judah in their prime and“We came close to fighting,” Spinks said. “I don’t know what happened, it was when I was fighting Zab. You know how boxing works, here and there promoters make agreements. But I would have loved to chase the great Kostya Tszyu.”
“That history has been written, and it’s made to be broken, but I just don’t think anyone is going to crack that egg. On the line is Tszyu’s WBO belt, the vacant WBC welterweight title and, potentially, a super bout against Terence Crawford, considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Tszyu has captured the imagination of the American public with his willingness to fight anyone, anytime, anywhere.
