The first Nintendo Switch revolutionized gaming with its hybrid console and handheld design, achieving massive success. Now, the Switch 2 is set to launch in 2025, entering a landscape significantly different from the one the original Switch faced. The rise of capable handheld gaming PCs, particularly fueled by Valve 's Steam Deck, presents a notable challenge to Nintendo.
The Steam Deck's user-friendly Linux-based SteamOS has made it incredibly easy to play games, comparable to console experiences.CES 2025 showcased a significant development in this space: Valve's plan to allow SteamOS installation on other handheld devices by April. This move could significantly expand the appeal of the handheld PC gaming market. The first non-Valve device with SteamOS will be Lenovo's $499 Legion Go S, launching in May. The possibility of numerous other hardware manufacturers releasing their own SteamOS handhelds is on the horizon, potentially bringing the magic of SteamOS to a wider range of devices. This increased competition could also incentivize Valve to create an even more impressive next-generation Steam Deck.CES 2025 was a showcase of innovative handheld gaming hardware beyond SteamOS. Acer unveiled the Nitro Blaze 11, a hefty device with a massive 10.95-inch screen, detachable controllers, and a kickstand. Intel and Tencent revealed a handheld featuring an 11-inch screen and stereo 3D capabilities. My colleague Sean Hollister had the opportunity to experience the MSI Claw 8 AI Plus firsthand. Razer introduced a docking station compatible with handheld gaming PCs. Additionally, during a CES panel, Microsoft pledged to announce changes to the handheld Windows experience later this year, potentially enhancing the experience for existing Windows-based hardware owners.Despite this surge in competition, the Switch 2 appears to be a compelling upgrade. Already announced features include a larger screen, potentially improved Joy-Cons, and a new Mario Kart installment. While detailed performance specifications remain undisclosed, the Switch 2 is expected to be significantly more powerful than its predecessor and likely to boast impressive new titles across other flagship Nintendo franchises. I anticipate that already-announced Switch games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A will receive enhancements for the Switch 2.Another key advantage for the Switch 2 is its backward compatibility with both physical and digital Switch games. This extensive library includes many acclaimed indie titles, some of which are also popular on handheld PCs. The Switch 2 faces a much more crowded marketplace than the original Switch encountered in 2017. However, this heightened competition could ultimately benefit consumers by driving innovation in both hardware and software. It's an exciting time for handheld gaming
