Three New Zealand superstars will make their Big Bash League debut this season, but for Black Caps speedster Lockie Ferguson, having already plied his trade in Sydney’s first-grade competition, it will feel more like a homecoming.during last week’s BBL Draft, returns to Sydney seven years after his most recent appearance for Sutherland District Cricket Club, having represented the Sharks in his early twenties.
“Obviously bowling in Australia is great, you get the pace and bounce, so hoping to get a bit of that there,” said Ferguson, the only specialist pace bowler chosen at this season’s BBL Draft. Having rejected a central contract with New Zealand Cricket, Ferguson has joined fellow Kiwis Trent Boult, Adam Milne and Finn Allen in prioritising T20 leagues over international commitments, while Black Caps superstars Kane Williamson and Devon Conway earned casual agreements that allow them to chase freelance opportunities.
“There’s no doubt the way franchise cricket’s going, it provides a lot of opportunities … certainly when it comes to the latter stages of your career. Ferguson, a fan of the NRL’s Warriors and NBL’s Breakers, also threw his support behind New Zealand getting its own team in the BBL should the competition ever consider expansion.“Not sure how it would work … but I certainly think it would be great to somehow get the New Zealand players playing the Big Bash as well.
