A fire has destroyed a historical synagogue building in South Dallas that served as a place of worship for local Jewish communities for nearly a century. The structure, which was badly damaged by the fire, has been demolished according to Dallas Fire-Rescue.

A 1988 photo of the building that once served as the synagogue for the Tiferet Israel Congregation in Dallas. A fire badly damaged the structure, which was later demolished Monday, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue.

“The resulting damage was so extensive that heavy equipment was requested, for safety reasons, to demolish the remnants,” Evans said.No one was injured in the fire. Because there were no witnesses to the beginning stages of the fire and investigators are unable to enter the building because of damage, the cause of the fire will be listed as undetermined, Evans said.

Dallas resident Jerry Candy, 78, said his parents attended weekly services at the synagogue after they moved to the city in the 1930s. The building is a special part of his childhood, Candy said. “I had some really good memories there. My grandfather was the caretaker there, so I’d play there when my grandfather was working. I went to Sunday school there, and when I was 9 years old, I started singing in the choir,” Candy said.A photo from the 1940s showing members of the Tiferet Israel Grand Avenue Religious School.Candy said he would still visit the building when he drove by South Dallas; it helped him remember the community that he and his family were part of.

The structure was one of the last monuments in South Dallas that memorialized the Jewish community’s presence in the area, Adams said.“The tragedy is very real,” Adams said. “It’s very devastating from a historical perspective and from a community standpoint.”
